Equal Opportunities

As we operate in more than one country, the legislative context of our equal opportunities policy varies. We are committed to ensuring that we comply with the legal requirements in all our locations, and our policies on equal opportunities are continually reviewed and updated in line with any legislative changes. In the UK, we are currently preparing for forthcoming legislation on age discrimination due to be implemented in 2006.

We prohibit the discriminatory treatment of any employee based on their age, colour, disability, ethnic or national origin, marital status, nationality, race, religion or similar belief, creed, sex, sexual orientation or military veteran's status.

We operate non-discriminatory policies, practices and initiatives in all aspects of employment, including recruitment and selection, career development, and retention.

We work proactively with a range of organisations that promote equality of opportunity in the UK, including:

  • the Equal Opportunities Commission;
  • the Employers' Forum on Age;
  • the Employers' Forum on Disability;
  • JobcentrePlus, and
  • the Council of British Pakistanis (Scotland).

In October 2004, ScottishPower in the UK hosted the Scottish Network conference of the Employers' Forum on Disability.

Willie MacDiarmid, ScottishPower's Managing Director of Customer Sales & Service, gave the opening address. Following on from this event, we rolled out disability awareness training to the senior management teams within many of the UK businesses. This training was delivered by Diane Nicol, a leading employment lawyer with McGrigors, who also delivered a presentation on the Disability Discrimination Act to the UK HR function at its 2005 conference.
